I am often asked ”what inspires you to paint,” “do I have to wait to see if the mood takes me?” The answer to the first question ,is that it varies enormously, from little incidental things such as seeing three unusual colours together, to the first tulips, someone’s face or an early morning sky. What they all have in common is beauty and an ability to raise the spirits. I have a compulsion to portray that. To make another human being stop and stare. Different subject matters attract different people, and that fascinates me too.
I feel that as time goes on and I now have more time to paint, the whole process is even more interesting, as it is only through painting for longer that you get further in terms of increasing your skill levels (hopefully), but also in terms of ideas developing and exploring interests in whatever I you are doing. I am continuing to explore oil painting, and now find each year that my visit to Chelsea Flower Show gives me a wealth of inspiration for my floral work . My landscapes, I am also developing as the continually challenge is to create atmosphere without detail. As I tell students so often, in order to paint a tree you don’t paint all the leaves.
Confidence is a huge element of painting or doing anything creative. It takes a lot to immediately cover a large canvas so usually I have initially to do something mundane, like priming a canvas or underpainting one to get me into the swing of things. Then I turn my music up extra loud and yes occasionally sing too! (That was easier when my studio was at home now it’s not such fun for my neighbours, being next to a wannabe Beyonce when they’re on the telephone.)
